Case Study A

Case Study A (Resource potential of the built infrastructure) develops and compares different approaches to determine the material composition of the built infrastructure. Comprehensive information about the materials composition of the infrastructure and buildings can be regarded as a basis for efficient resource management during operation, renewal, modernization and final demolition. The characterization approaches are tested for applicability, potential to complete each other and usefulness as single case studies.

Based on the results of case study A, “structure-specific” guidelines for the material characterization are suggested. Based on the material composition recommendations regarding the deconstruction and recycling of C&D waste should be given. In addition, a tool for recording the material composition of new structures (under construction) will be established (“material based building pass”). In future this should enable a resource efficient and environmentally compatible maintenance, renewal and modernization of the built infrastructure.
